![]() Like the bezel, the signed crown is also cut with a deep coin edge. I always appreciate a little something special in terms of bezel design or materials, and this glossy beauty delivers appealing gloss and depth of color. The insert is sapphire with a BGW9 SuperLuminova dive timer. Bezel action is reassuringly firm, moving through its 120 detents without wobble or back play. It was an easy fit under my shirt cuffs and looked perfectly appropriate on my modest wrist.Ītop this case is a double-domed, anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal surrounded by a unidirectional bezel with a cleanly defined coin edge. All the edges are crisp without being unpleasantly sharp and the arc and taper of the lugs eliminate unnecessary bulk. It is a stately design that is nicely executed. Overall length is 50mm and it is 13mm thick. These surface effects are also apparent on the black version, lending subtle depth to the otherwise stealthy case. The upper surface is brushed north-south as is the link bracelet. The case sides are flat and horizontally brushed with an intentionally pronounced grain that is offset by a narrow, polished chamfer that runs their length. Spacing is 20mm and the lugs are drilled for easy spring bar release. The Trieste has a 41mm stainless steel case with long, tapered lugs that curve gently away from the barrel and terminate in tight, clipped ends. I received two watches that covered almost everything, one of each movement: a steel/blue/date and a black/red/dateless. The dial is only offered in black with a date window option. The Trieste is a single model available in a choice of two finishes (steel or PVD black), three bezels (black, red, or blue), and two movements (NH35a or STP1-11). I wouldn’t go so far as to call it an homage so much as an inspiration. Many watches in this genre take their cues from the Rolex Submariner but Nodus appears to have channeled the Blancpain Bathyscaphe. The fellows at Nodus think the Trieste has what it takes to survive in this crowded field, and the sent me a pair of press loaners to prove it. That may very well be the most common and yet the most difficult design brief in all of watchdom because just about every micro, independent, and mass-market heavyweight have produced a similar offering. ![]() Have we heard this before? Of course we have. Above all, the art exhibitions have allowed Massimo Gardone to give an expressive space to his artistic, visionary and conceptual soul.Cullen Chen and Wesley Kwok of Nodus Watches have just launched their debut piece, the Trieste, an affordable, 200m, automatic diver’s watch that can go longboard to boardroom and back. His research on flowers becomes an essential part of Company communications, of packaging and design objects. With uprightness and, together with eclecticism, he succeeds in transferring passions and art also to the needs of commercial assignors which are rich of unexpected values. He is a kind of image alchemist committed to mix different techniques, materials, sounds which means to communicate and to be communicated, without fearing the banality that, eventually, could suggest a flower to less attentive souls. His research, started with black and white, has now met the colour without ever tiring of reinventing it through the use of techniques spacing from the art of matter of Polaroid to the precision of digital: lights, shadows, handicrafts, technical, cotton, ceramic, glass, unicity, cloning, knowledge and experimentation. He has always lived between music and image and for him, the almost obsessive exploration of flowers represents a continuous conjugation of harmony, shapes and colours. A subject particularly dear to Massimo Gardone: the flowers have always solicited his anxiety of experimentation and research. The flowers, the research, the experimentation – Each flower is the summary of the existence as a cycle, as a value, as a shape and meaning: to look into and to interpret them, transforming them in a malleable material is a work without end and certainly produces representations that are always different. Through photography he tells about himself and relates along the way of creativity also when it intersects with the needs of the commercial assignors.Ī bet on creativity is the one of innovation that, through photography, investigating on the various expressions of the image, transmits his narration through different means: communication, editorial products, video, design and exhibitions. ![]()
